Dr. Scott “Doc” and Caitlin own and operate Ankeny Animal & Avian Clinic in Ankeny, Iowa. Doc has been a veterinarian for 35 years. We bought our first setter in 1996. Doc’s thought at the time was “I’ve never met a setter as a patient that I wouldn’t take home as a pet.” Caitlin was only too happy to greet the arrival of their first Llewellin who proved not only to be a marvelous pet but an amazing hunter for Doc.
In 2008 Caitlin said that she wanted a smaller lap dog. Doc said “fine, as long as it can point birds!” This led to “Frenchie” our first Epagneul Breton (French Brittany). The wonderful combination of affectionate house pet, smaller size, and athletic hunting ability of the French Brittany would be hard to find. People ask us which breed we prefer, and we answer “we can’t understand why everyone doesn’t have at least one of each!”
We started out in the city with one Llewellin but it quickly became apparent that one was not enough so we moved to the country to have two or three. Thirteen years later we’ve built a beautiful kennel and now have four Llewellin Setters and two Epagneul Bretons. All of them are wonderful house pets.
Hunting and training bird dogs became Doc’s passion and Caitlin’s enthusiasm for puppies has led us to this point. We are a small hobby kennel – having a limited number of litters yearly. Our requirement for breeding stock is that they housebreak readily, make friends for us at our pet hospital, and hunt better than Doc’s buddies’ dogs! Additionally we border on obsessive about the quality of our dog’s hips as we know this is the number one genetic problem with Llewellin Setters.
What sets us apart from other breeders?
We offer a fourteen day grace period on all of our puppies and we guarantee they will hunt!
